World Cup Injuries - by Brobury Sports

Injuries are rearing its head in the World Cup once again. German captain Michael Ballack will miss the tournament with an ankle injury.

The midfielder had an MRI which revealed ligament damage. This is a big blow to the German team that is 4/5 favorites to win Group D, and one of the favorites (12/1) to win the whole thing. Other key injury news is as follows:

Charlie Davies, United States

Davies is out of the World Cup, after trying to make the team after recovering from an auto accident last fall. He would have been a big asset after his contributions in the Confederation Cup last June. The U.S. team often struggles to put the ball in the net in the World Cup and this is just another blow to their forwards.

The United States is 21/5 to win Group C, trailing heavily favored England (3/10). They’re 66/1 to win the World Cup.

Fernando Torres, Spain

Spain striker Fernando Torres had surgery to repair some torn knee cartilage in April. Torres teams with David Villa to form the top striker tandem in the World Cup, but how much will that be affected due to this injury?

Spain is the big 1/4 favorite to win Group H and the favorite to win the World Cup at 4/1.

David Beckham, England

Beckham will not play in the World Cup after suffering an Achilles tendon injury in March. The 34-year-old is a former captain and would have been the first England player to compete in four straight World Cups.

This was more of a blow for Beckham himself as he likely would not have started anyhow.

Wayne Rooney, England

Rooney is the potential bigger injury news for England. He re-injured his groin, although he should be fine for the opening match against the United States. Rooney has also been dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

England is the heavy 3/10 favorite to win Group C and 6/1 to win the World Cup, only trailing Spain (4/1) and Brazil (5/1).

Spain (4/1) is the Euro 2008 winner and the favorite despite its highest World Cup finish being 4th (1950). They boast the top striker tandem in the tournament with David Villa and Fernando Torres. Anything less than a first place finish will be a huge disappointment.

Brazil (5/1) has the most World Cup titles with five. This team always has an incredible collection of talent. The challenge is melding them into a cohesive group. Kaka is the biggest name of them all, and it will be great to see him on this stage.

England (6/1) is looking for its first World Cup title since 1966. Their highest recent finish was fourth in 1990. Forward Wayne Rooney has been dealing with injury problems, but fans aren’t interested in any excuses with England one of the heavy favorites.

Argentina (15/2) is a boom or bust kind of pick with coach Diego Maradona. This is an extremely talented squad, but finished just fourth in South American qualifying. Can talent prevail and allow them their first title since 1986 when Maradona was doing his playing magic on the pitch?

Germany, Holland and Italy are all 12/1. Italy is the defending champ and four-time winner, but has gotten older in key spots. Germany has three World Cup titles, but none since 1990. Holland has been historic underachievers and is looking for its first title.

Note a European team has never won the World Cup when played outside of Europe.

USA’s (66/1) highest finish at a World Cup was third in 1930. They open up against England as a +500 underdog.

Group A

South Africa is the home country, but they’ll have a very hard time advancing as the long shot here. France made the final in 2006 before losing to Italy.

France 1/1
Mexico 10/3
Uruguay 7/2
South Africa 5/1

Group B

Argentina always has plenty of talent and this year is no exception. Greece is looking for payback after missing the 2006 World Cup.

Argentina 4/9
Nigeria 4/1
Greece 7/1
South Korea 9/1

Group C

This is a very favorable draw for England, who has the Americans as the second-favorite in the Group. Team USA needs to advance to the second round to keep making strides.

England 3/10
USA 21/5
Slovenia 10/1
Algeria 14/1

Group D

The Germans are a solid all-around team once again. They finished in the top-3 in the last two World Cups. Serbia, Ghana and Australia look to battle for the other spot.

Germany 4/5
Serbia 10/3
Ghana 4/1
Australia 13/2

Group E

Netherlands has never won the World Cup, last finishing as runner-up in the 1970’s. The other three teams aren’t conceding anything and Netherlands advancing is not a given.

Netherlands 4/7
Denmark 15/4
Cameroon 9/2
Japan 11/1

Group F

Italy is the defending champs, but this team is not as strong as prior versions. Paraguay hasn’t had much prior World Cup success, but they should advance this year.

Italy 7/20
Paraguay 7/2
Slovakia 13/2
New Zealand 50/1

Group G

Brazil has the most World Cup titles with five, last winning in 2002. Portugal and Ivory Coast are fortunate that early-exit North Korea is in this draw.

Brazil 1/2
Portugal 10/3
Ivory Coast 15/4
North Korea 100/1

Group H

Spain is the favorite in the whole tournament and thus the heaviest favorite out of any Group. Chile looks like the toughest competition out of the rest.

Spain 1/4
Chile 9/2
Switzerland 9/1
Honduras 28/1
