Friday's Worlds Capsules
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic (AP) - Yelena Leuchanka scored 17 points and Yuliya Dureika added 15 to help Belarus upset top-seeded Russia 70-53 Friday in the quarterfinals of the women's basketball world championship.
The team from the former Soviet Republic advanced to a semifinal against the Czech Republic on Saturday.
Becky Hammon scored 16 points and Svetlana Abrosimova added 14 to lead Russia (6-1). The Russians cruised through the preliminary rounds, winning by an average of 18 points.
The Belorussians have improved on the international scene in the last few years. They finished third at the European Championship in 2007 and qualified for their first Olympics in 2008, placing sixth in Beijing.
Trailing by six at the half, Russia scored the first six points of the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Abrosimova, who plays for WNBA champion Seattle Storm, and a nifty three-point play by Hammon of the San Antonio Silver Stars.
Then Dureika took over, hitting back-to-back 3s and a layup to make it 44-33.
Olga Arteshenka made a layup to cut the deficit to nine, but the Belorussians (4-3) scored the next 10 points to put the game away.
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic - Angel McCoughtry scored 17 points to help the United States rout South Korea and advance to the semifinals.
Maya Moore added 15 points, Candice Dupree 12 and Swin Cash 11 for the U.S. (7-0), which had six players in double figures en route to one of the most lopsided victories in worlds history.
The U.S., which made it to the medal round for the ninth straight time, will take on Spain.
The Americans scored 19 of the first 25 points to put the game away early. Lim Yung Hui had 10 points to lead South Korea (3-4), which advanced to the quarterfinals by finishing fourth in its group.
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic (AP) - Eva Viteckova scored 27 points to help the Czech Republic knock off defending champion Australia.
The host nation will face Belarus in one semifinal Saturday.
Leading 52-51, the Czechs opened the final quarter with a 11-2 run. Hana Horakova hit back-to-back 3s and Viteckova capped the spurt with a 3 that gave them a 63-53 lead. That ignited the spirited home crowd, which included President Vaclav Klaus.
Australia tried to mount a comeback, but could only get within six in the final 2 minutes.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Czech players piled onto each other underneath the basket to celebrate, while the 5,000-plus fans proudly waved their red-and-white flags and tooted their vuvuzelas.
Liz Cambage scored 22 points to lead Australia, while Lauren Jackson added 13. The WNBA MVP had a rough game, missing her first seven shots en route to a 3-for-15 performance. Her All-Star teammate Penny Taylor had an even tougher time, making just 2 of 15.
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic - Amaya Valdemoro scored 28 points and Anna Montanana added 14 to lead Spain over France.
Spain will face the U.S. in a semifinal Saturday, but could be missing star center Sancho Lyttle, who injured her back against France. Coach Jose Hernandez said it's doubtful she'll play against the U.S.
Alba Torrens scored the first four points of the extra period before France went on a 6-0 run to take a 71-69 lead on Emmeline Ndongue's two free throws with 1:30 left in overtime.
Lima then hit a free throw and a layup after a nifty pass from Torrens with 38 seconds left to give Spain a 72-71 lead.
France turned the ball over on its next possession and Montanana sealed the win hitting two free throws with 6 seconds left.
Valdemoro hit a layup just before the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
Ndongue scored 14 to lead France, which will play South Korea in the classification round.
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic - Yuko Oga scored 19 points, including two free throws with 9.3 seconds left to lift Japan over Greece.
Yoko Nagi and Yoshie Sakurada added 10 points apiece for Japan (2-5), which will play Brazil on Saturday for ninth place.
With the clock winding down and Greece trailing by two points, Dimitra Kalentzou missed a 3-pointer from the wing. Evanthia Maltsi got the offensive rebound, but her putback rimmed out and then her follow also missed.
Oga then hit two free throws to seal the game.
Maltsi finished with 27 points to lead Greece (2-5), which will play Canada.
KARLOVY VARY, Czech Republic - Iziane Castro Marques scored eight of her 16 points in the final 1:46 to help Brazil edge Canada.
Erika de Souza added 12 points and 13 rebounds for Brazil (3-4), which will play Japan in the ninth-place game.
Castro Marques hit a driving lay-in to give Brazil a 61-58 lead with 44.5 seconds left. She then gave Canada a chance to tie it, committing an unsportsmanlike foul against Taamar Tatham. The Canadian forward missed both free throws and then Kim Smith's 3-point attempt rattled off.
Castro Marques hit two free throws to seal the game.
Smith led Canada (1-6) with 17 points and Courtney Pilypaitis added 11.
