Red Wings sign F Kirk Maltby to 1-year contract
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Kirk Maltby to a one-year contract.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland announced the signing Wednesday. The two-way contract means he can play in Detroit and for the Grand Rapids Griffins, the team's American Hockey League affiliate.
The 37-year-old Maltby has been a Red Wing since the 1995-96 season, helping the franchise win four Stanley Cups as a role player. He has played in 169 playoff games, a total that trails just three players in Red Wings history.
Maltby scored just four goals and had two assists in 52 games last season and will likely be on the fourth line if he makes the team this year. He averaged just more than 10 points the previous four seasons.
