Tomlin named Indians' fifth starter
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Josh Tomlin has earned the final spot in the Cleveland Indians rotation.
Tomlin comfirmed Friday morning that manager Manny Acta told him he had beaten out left-hander David Huff and right-hander Jeanmar Gomez for the final spot.
Huff, Gomez and outfielder Ezequiel Carrera were optioned to Triple-A Columbus. Veteran right-handers Doug Mathis and Anthony Reyes were reassigned to minor league camp.
Tomlin joins opening day starter Fausto Carmona, Justin Masterson, Mitch Talbot and Carlos Carrasco in the rotation. All are right-handed.
The 26-year-old had an exceptional spring, compiling a 1.13 ERA in three outings against major league competition. In a recent start in a minor league game, he worked five perfect innings, striking out five.
