Reds stay pat before trade deadline
CINCINNATI (AP) -The Reds tried to strengthen their bullpen before the trade deadline, but ended up staying pat after a couple of potential deals fell through.
While other playoff contenders made moves Saturday to improve, including the NL Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati didn't strike a deal.
General manager Walt Jocketty says the Reds were working on a couple of deals, but the players they wanted wound up staying with their teams. The bullpen has been Cincinnati's main focus for improvement. Jocketty noted that they could bring up someone from the minors.
Cuban defector Aroldis Chapman has been switched to a relief role in Triple-A to see if that's an option.
