Astros close to extension with Brett Myers

HOUSTON (AP) -The Houston Astros are close to a multiyear contract extension with starting pitcher Brett Myers.

General manager Ed Wade says there was “tremendous” interest in the right-hander leading to Saturday's trade deadline. The Astros chose to keep him and make him an “anchor” in their rotation after this week's trade of ace Roy Oswalt to Philadelphia.

Wade didn't have a timetable on when the deal would be done, but says they are “very, very close” to completing it.

Myers is 8-6 with a 3.10 ERA and has pitched at least six innings in each of his 21 starts this season. The 29-year-old pitcher signed a one-year, $3.1 million contract with a mutual option for 2011 in January.
