Power vs Franchitti for IndyCar title
HOMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) - Dario Franchitti just keeps getting bigger in Will Power's rearview mirror.
The defending IndyCar champion captured the pole for Saturday's season finale at Homestead, putting together a top lap of 213.187 mph around the 1.5-mile oval to pull within 11 points of Power in the championship race.
Franchitti's Target Chip Ganassi Racing teammate Scott Dixon will start second.
Power qualified third but could lose the lead he's held for almost the entire season if Franchitti wins and leads the most laps on Saturday night.
Franchitti is looking to become the first driver to post back-to-back championships since Sam Hornish Jr. in 2001 and 2002. The 37-year-old Franchitti came into last year's season finale third in points but gambled on pit strategy to win his second career title.
