Lotus to build engines, cars in IndyCar series
LOS ANGELES (AP) -Lotus is ready to take on the big boys in the IndyCar Series.
The England-based auto manufacturer will design engines for the open-wheel series when it launches its new car platform in 2012.
Lotus will join Honda and Chevrolet, who announced last week it is returning to IndyCar in 2012 after a five-year hiatus. Engine details have not been released.
Lotus served as a sponsor for the No. 5 car driven by Takuma Sato this season and driver Jim Clark used a Lotus chassis when he won the 1965 Indy 500.
IndyCar president Randy Bernard called the signing another important step toward creating more competition in the series, which has been using Honda engines exclusively.
