Chevy returning to IndyCar Series
Chevy is headed back to the IndyCar Series.
Out of the series for six years, Chevrolet will return in 2012 with a twin-turbocharged V-6 racing engine. The engine will be developed by General Motors in conjunction with Ilmor Engineering for Team Penske.
The announcement was made Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Chevy previously provided V-8 engines for the circuit in 1986-93 and 2002-05, winning six driver championships and seven Indianapolis 500 titles.
Honda has been the sole engine supplier since 2006, but IndyCar changed its engine and chassis platforms for 2012 earlier this year to allow more competition.
Honda will continue to provide engines to the series.
Chevy may also develop an aero kit for the new chassis.
