Welken wins at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) -Welken defeated Zilla by one length to win the $52,800 allowance feature for fillies and mares on Thursday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Mike Smith, the 6-year-old mare gradually closed from fifth in the field of seven to overtake Zilla at the 16th pole. She covered 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:46.72 and paid $5.40, $3.40 and $2.60. Welken was not favored, closing at 17-10 odds.
Zilla returned $7.80 and $5.40, while Prytania paid $7 to show.
The victory, worth $31,200, increased Welken's career earnings to $277,073. It was her sixth win in her last eight starts.
