Southern Fireball wins at Santa Anita
ARCADIA, Calif. (AP) - Long shot Southern Fireball beat favorite Gilded Gem by a head to win the $61,740 Sara Smile Purse for fillies and mares on Friday at Santa Anita.
Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Southern Fireball covered 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt in 1:15.11 and paid $19 and $6. Gilded Gem returned $3.
The victory, worth $37,800, increased Southern Fireball's career earnings to $171,789.
The win was Southern Fireball's first in eight starts over 10 months.
