Del Mar set to open summer racing season
DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) - Undefeated Twirling Candy makes his stakes debut Wednesday when Del Mar opens its 71st summer meet with the $100,000 Oceanside Stakes.
Twirling Candy, a son of 2003 Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride, leads a field of 10 3-year-olds in the one-mile race on the Jimmy Durante turf course.
Twirling Candy is 2 for 2 for trainer John Sadler.
Among his rivals are Macias, Gallant Gent and Domonation, also trained by Sadler. Macias, trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, has yet to win a graded stakes race, but he has the most earnings of any horse in the race with $185,597 and will carry high weight of 121 pounds. He has four wins in 10 career starts.
