33-1 shot Makfi wins English 2,000 Guineas
NEWMARKET, England (AP) -Long shot Makfi has won the 2,000 Guineas at 33-1 odds, beating Dick Turpin by 1 1/4 lengths in the first classic of the English season.
Christophe Lemaire guided the Mikel Delzangles-trained Makfi through a gap in the 19-strong field at Newmarket on Saturday.
Canford Cliffs was third and favorite St. Nicholas Abbey failed to find any speed in the last 400 yards and finished well off the pace.
