2009 Derby winner Mine That Bird preps for Whitney
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) - Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird is on target for his second start of the year in the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga on Aug. 7.
The 2009 Derby winner worked a mile in 1:40.14 under jockey Calvin Borel on Wednesday.
Trainer D. Wayne Lukas said he “loved his work” and the 4-year-old gelding “came home with good energy.”
Mine That Bird is 0-for-6 since winning the Derby at odds of 50-1.
The horse ran eighth in a turf race at Churchill Downs on July 4 in his 2010 debut. It also was his first start for Lukas, who replaced Chip Woolley.
Mine That Bird was second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont before closing out '09 with losses in the West Virginia Derby, the Goodwood and the Breeders' Cup Classic.
