Former 1930s Duke QB Hackney dies at age 95

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - A former Duke quarterback who won 24 games during his three seasons playing for the Blue Devils in the 1930s has died.

The university says Elmore Hackney died Saturday in San Dimas, Calif., at the age of 95.

Hackney, whose nickname was “Honeyboy,” ran for 1,359 yards and 20 touchdowns over his Duke career, leading the team to Southern Conference titles in 1935 and 1936.

In his senior season in 1937, Hackney was named a second-team all-American as he ran for 490 yards and nine touchdowns.

Hackney picked up 136 yards returning punts in a 1936 game against Colgate, which remains second in the school's record books.

Hackney was named to the Duke Athletics Hall of Fame in 1982 and operated the scoreboard at Blue Devils football games for 50 seasons.
