Florida State linebacker Carr faces felony charges
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -Florida State linebacker Nigel Carr was freed on a $15,750 bond after being jailed on five separate criminal allegations, including two felony charges, authorities said Monday.
Carr was arrested by Tallahassee police Sunday on two counts of auto burglary, criminal mischief, credit card theft and fraud. A police report said items taken from a vehicle were found in a trash bin at Carr's apartment complex, leading to his arrest.
First-year coach Jimbo Fisher, who was in North Carolina attending his inaugural Atlantic Coast Conference football kickoff, said the 230-pound junior would be disciplined in accordance to the university's athletics code of conduct.
“If it's a felony, it's an automatic suspension,” Fisher said Monday. “It only takes one incident. You've got to make choices and there's repercussions, good or bad.”
It's the first time since replacing Bobby Bowden in January that Fisher has had a player arrested on felony charges.
“They're going to make bad choices at times, and we're going to help steer them in the right direction,” Fisher said. “Allegations like that can ruin a young man's life or derail it.”
A police report also noted Carr was arrested shortly before midnight on July 22 and charged with possession of marijuana and pleaded with police not to take him to jail.
“No, no,” Carr said when being handcuffed that night. “I can't go to jail.”
A sympathetic officer then agreed to issue a notice to appear since Carr had no previous record and was cooperative, the police report said.
Florida State officials declined to make Carr available for comment.
Carr, 20, was named the Seminoles most dependable linebacker in spring practice and was slated to begin the season as their starting strong side linebacker.
Carr played in all 13 games last season for the Seminoles and was credited with 26 tackles, which was 10th best on a team that finished 7-6.
His backup on Florida State's depth chart, senior Mister Alexander, is regarded a superior pass rusher from the position.
