Dunbar retires as NM State offensive coordinator
LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The offensive coordinator for the New Mexico State football program has announced his retirement after just one year with the team.
Mike Dunbar joined the Aggies last season after stints as the offensive coordinator at Minnesota, California, Northwestern and Toledo. He was also head coach at Northern Iowa and Central Washington during more than 25 years in football.
The 63-year-old Dunbar helped New Mexico State's offense improve to No. 112 in the nation in total offense last season.
His retirement comes just a month before spring practices begin. He did not return phone messages left by the Las Cruces Sun-News after his announcement on Friday.
Head coach DeWayne Walker said he did not know why Dunbar resigned now rather than after the end of the 2010 season.
