Bama opens spring seeking to fill voids
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) - Alabama opened spring practice trying to replace three star underclassmen and quarterback Greg McElroy and dealing with off-the-field issues involving two safeties.
The Crimson Tide held its first practice Monday in the aftermath of a weekend arrest of All-American Mark Barron on a misdemeanor charge of hindering prosecution. Coach Nick Saban says Barron “used poor judgment” in trying to protect someone else.
Robby Green, who missed last season on NCAA suspension, is now suspended for violating team rules. Saban said any disciplinary action against both players will be handled internally.
Other issues include replacing Heisman winner Mark Ingram, Marcell Dareus and Julio Jones.
Sophomore A.J. McCarron and redshirt freshman Phillip Sims are battling at quarterback.
