APNewsBreak: Notre Dame to ban hydraulic lifts
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The University of Notre Dame has decided to stop using hydraulic lifts to film football practices after a student plunged to his death while videoing a practice in October.
University officials said Tuesday that the school will instead use a remote video system.
Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins, says the system will prevent a repeat of the Oct. 27 accident that killed 20-year-old Declan Sullivan of Long Grove, Ill. Sullivan was in a hydraulic lift videoing football practice when it toppled as winds gusted up to 51 mph.
The university says four cameras are being placed atop 50-foot-high poles. The system will be ready when spring practice opens March 23.
The Indiana Occupational Health and Safety Administration is investigating the accident.
