NCAA tournament committee focused on 65, not 96
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -The chairman of the Division I Men's Basketball Committee says possible expansion of the NCAA tournament isn't on the minds of the group that will select the 2010 field this weekend.
UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said Wednesday that the immediate focus is on selecting the best 34 at-large teams for the 65-team field. The first choices will be made Wednesday, and information will be gathered until the brackets are announced on Sunday.
Guerrero acknowledged that discussion about expansion has heated up, but said it is an “evergreen topic,” that has no bearing on his committee's work. He says there's enough to do in the next several days without considering the merits of a larger field.
